Insider advice from the LonelyRoad community

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Mobile Data & eSIM: Get data for Sydney with PikaSim - 0.5GB for 7 days costs $0.80 (other options: 0.1GB/7d for $0.60, 0.5GB/1d for $1.00). Privacy-focused, no account needed, instant activation. Get yours at https://pikasim.com/download-australia-esim-packages
  • Visa & Entry for German citizens: Germany passport holders can enter Australia visa-free BUT must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) BEFORE departure. Apply online at https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au or via the AustralianETA app ($20 AUD fee). Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of stay. ETA allows multiple visits up to 3 months each within 12 months. Processing is usually instant but apply at least 72 hours before departure. Proof of onward travel may be requested.
  • Get an Opal Card immediately at the airport or any newsagent for public transport. It's much cheaper than single tickets and works on trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. Weekly cap makes unlimited weekend travel great value.
  • Sydney's weather can change quickly. Even in summer, bring a light jacket for evenings and air-conditioned spaces. Sun protection is essential year-round - the UV index is extremely high.
  • Solo travelers should join free walking tours in The Rocks or Bondi to meet other travelers. I'm Free Walking Tours and Free Tours Sydney offer excellent introduction to the city with tip-based payment.
  • Download the TripView app for real-time public transport updates. Sydney's public transport is excellent and you rarely need taxis or rideshares except late at night.
  • Tap water is safe and high quality throughout Sydney. Carry a reusable bottle to save money and reduce plastic waste. Free water refill stations are common.
  • Cafes and restaurants typically don't expect tips in Australia - service staff earn proper wages. Round up for excellent service, but 10% is generous and never obligatory. No tipping in bars or cafes.
