๐Ÿ’ก Local Tips

Insider advice from the LonelyRoad community

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Mobile Data & eSIM: Get data for Hong Kong with PikaSim - 0.5GB for 7 days costs $0.80 (other options: 0.1GB/7d for $0.60, 0.5GB/1d for $0.90). Privacy-focused, no account needed, instant activation. Get yours at https://pikasim.com/download-hong-kong-china-esim-packages
  • Visa & Entry for US citizens: US passport holders can enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport must be valid for at least 1 month beyond your intended stay (6 months recommended). No pre-arrival registration or ETA required. You'll receive a landing slip upon arrival - keep this with your passport. Proof of onward travel (return ticket) may be requested. No arrival fees or tourist taxes. Check https://www.immd.gov.hk for current requirements before travel.
  • Get an Octopus Card immediately at the airport - it works on all public transport (MTR, buses, ferries, trams) and many convenience stores and restaurants. Refundable deposit makes it risk-free, and it saves significant time versus buying tickets.
  • Hong Kong's MTR is incredibly efficient and English-friendly. Download the MTR Mobile app for route planning. The Airport Express to Central takes 24 minutes and runs until midnight. After midnight, take the N-buses (night buses) which are much cheaper.
  • For digital nomads: Hong Kong has excellent 4G/5G coverage. Get a local SIM at the airport (China Mobile, CSL, or 3HK) - around HKD 80-150 for 8GB data. Many cafes have WiFi but speeds vary; coworking spaces are more reliable for video calls with clients.
  • Safety is excellent for solo male travelers. Hong Kong is one of Asia's safest cities. That said, avoid unlicensed money changers and be cautious in Chungking/Mirador Mansions at night. Scams are rare but watch for overpriced tourist restaurants in Tsim Sha Tsui.
  • Accommodation is expensive and small. Book ahead, especially during peak seasons (Oct-Dec, Chinese New Year). Consider staying in Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun, or Wan Chai for better value than Central. Kowloon side (Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok) is also cheaper.
  • Meet other travelers and expats through meetup.com groups, coworking events, or hostel activities. The digital nomad community is active - check Facebook groups like 'Hong Kong Digital Nomads' or attend WeWork community events for networking.
