Insider advice from the LonelyRoad community

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Mobile Data & eSIM: Get data for Dubai with PikaSim - 0.5GB for 7 days costs $2.20 (other options: 0.1GB/7d for $0.60, 0.5GB/1d for $2.20). Privacy-focused, no account needed, instant activation. Get yours at https://pikasim.com/download-united-arab-emirates-esim-packages
  • Visa & Entry for United Kingdom citizens: UK passport holders receive a FREE 30-day visa on arrival in Dubai (UAE). No pre-application needed. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from entry date. Ensure you have proof of onward travel and hotel booking. No arrival forms required. Visit https://u.ae/en/information-and-services/visa-and-emirates-id for official information.
  • Dubai Metro is excellent for solo travelers - clean, safe, air-conditioned, and connects major areas. Get a Nol Card (rechargeable travel card) at any station. Gold class carriages offer extra comfort for slightly higher fare.
  • Respect local customs: Dress modestly in public areas (shoulders and knees covered), especially in older districts like Deira and Bur Dubai. Avoid public displays of affection. During Ramadan, avoid eating/drinking in public during daylight hours.
  • Best time to visit is November to March when temperatures are pleasant (20-30ยฐC). Summer (June-August) is extremely hot (40-45ยฐC) but hotels are significantly cheaper and attractions less crowded.
  • Download Careem and Uber apps for reliable, safe transportation. Both work well in Dubai and are more convenient than regular taxis. RTA taxis (cream-colored) are also safe and metered.
  • Al Fahidi and Alserkal Avenue are perfect for solo cultural exploration - safe, walkable, and easy to spend hours at your own pace. Both areas have excellent cafes for breaks.
  • Friday is the main day of prayer - many attractions open later (after 2pm). Weekends are Friday-Saturday in UAE. Plan cultural activities for weekdays when sites are less crowded and operate normal hours.
